Smokey Caramel Dalgona Coffee

Butterkicap Dalgona Coffee / Whipped Coffee with Gula Melaka

With everyone stuck indoors and practicing social distancing, many of us are heading into the kitchen for a little bit of experimentation and fun. From food hacks to unique drinks, one of the most interesting things to come out of many a lockdown kitchen is the Dalgona Coffee.

The drink itself originates from the India, Pakistan and Macau region. It also known as Soft Coffee, hand-beaten Cappuccino, Desi Cappuccino, Phitti Hui Coffee or Whipped Coffee. The name ‘Dalgona Coffee’ became popular because it first went viral in South Korea and looks a lot like a Korean toffee of the same name.

Whatever you choose to call it, this drink has taken over the world. There is simple happiness in topping a tall glass of cold milk with a creamy, thick, glossy coffee cream. Mmmmm…

Gula Melaka for a Smokey Caramel Kick

Come on, it’s pretty hard not to notice this frothy creamy concoction popping up all over your social media feed. From Tik Tok to Instagram, this simple, delightful drink is set to be a permanent feature in everyone’s drink repertoire.

Part of the appeal of this drink is the simplicity. With only four basic ingredients, you’re all set and ready to whip up your very own Dalgona Coffee. If you want a more intense caramel flavour a la Caramel Macchiato, replace the white sugar with Gula Melaka or Palm Sugar. The smokey caramel flavour of this local sugar adds a nice simple kick.

It’s as simple as that!

Gula Melaka Dalgona Coffee

Ingredients:

2 tbsp instant coffee

2 tbsp Gula Melaka or Palm sugar, finely grated (white or brown sugar will suffice if you don’t have palm sugar)

2 tbsp hot water

400 ml milk

Method:

In a bowl, add instant coffee, sugar and hot water and start whipping away with a hand whisk. You’ll see the mixture get thicker very quickly. Keep beating until you get creamy stiff peaks. This should take about 5 to 6 minutes.

Fill two glasses with cold milk and ice or one ginormous glass, if you’re having this all to yourself.

Top with the thick whipped coffee mixture.

Stir and enjoy.

Can you believe making this drink is that easy?! Watch the video to see just how quickly it all comes together!
