Weirdest Yet Popular Food Combinations Ever Existed in Malaysia

In life, some things just go so well together, as if it has always been meant to be. Cookies and milk, peanut butter and jelly and bacon and eggs are some of my personal favourite (and yours too, I bet). However, we all know life always has a way to knock your socks off that may raise your eyebrows. If many people say do not judge a book by its cover, this time I’m telling you not to judge a food flavor by its combination. Nasi lemak and gelato? Strawberry and sambal? Have a spoonful of them. Before you know it, you might acquire the taste and crave for more and more.

Nasi Lemak Gelato

Are we even on the same page? How could one even combine our staple nasi lemak with a scoop of gelato? The idea itself is crazy enough to make a mincemeat out of it, I mean lemak on lemak? As bizarre as it might sound, the essentially coconut milk infused gelato perfectly balances the sprinkles of chilli, crunchy peanuts and dusts of salty anchovies. It’s the definition of Italian meets Malaysian. If you’re up for a challenge, why not try a scoop first at Whimsical Gelateria and Café by Cielo Dolci. Make sure to keep a close eye on their Facebook page because the flavor is only available periodically and on a limited basis!

Patin with Tempoyak

For some of you, you’ll only be surprised once you know what Tempoyak is. Come on, make a guess, although I doubt the ingredient will come across your mind. Tempoyak is basically durian flesh that has gone through a process of fermentation with a help of some salt. Add some patin fish with it and your food is served. The durian coating the fish is the kind of food you can smell from a distance, but it’s Pahang’s most favourite way to cook the freshwater silver catfish. Slightly watery but rich in flavour, the gravy complements the soft fish very well, especially with a spoonful of sambal belacan!

Most people fell in love with salted egg yolk at first taste but it was an acquired taste for me. However, once I fell for it, I fell quite hard to the point of constant cravings! I came to love their combination of saltiness with a hint of sweetness aftertaste of the creamy gravy. The versatile ingredient is so versatile I can almost eat it with anything. So, when food and beverages hop onto the salted egg yolk bandwagon with their molten chocolate lava cake, how can I possible resist? Combining one of my favourite dessert with my favourite flavour, the oozing salted egg is a goodness gracious that gets my heart.
